The famous Chellonia (tortoise) sanctuary at Gonflaron is trying to help prevent the local tortoise
population from becoming extinct. Development, summer fires and
changes in agriculture mean that they are gradually dying out. At the sanctuary they are bred
in large pens and then released to the wild after 10-15 years, when
mature. They also care for a wide range of other species from around the world. Below is a tropical
